Job Summary

A lot of amazing cities all over the world are defined by the buildings that have been constructed. Whether it’s New York’s Empire State Building or London’s Shard, one of the key individuals who helps build such structures are Civil Engineers. They design and manage construction and maintenance of building structures. This is not just solely skyscrapers, but also includes roads, bridges and railways to name a few.


There are two types of Civil Engineers who both work alongside each other. Consulting Civil Engineers are part of the initial planning and design process of constructing a building structure. This is then passed on to the Contracting Civil Engineer who initiates the plan to see tangible results. Together they could be involved with the following responsibilities:

  • Undertaking prior research on the site and necessary feasibility studies
  • Developing detailed design plans and making future alterations if needed
  • Constant communication with clients and a variety of professionals such as Subcontractors and Architects
  • Scheduling deliveries of materials and equipment purchases, ensuring quality is met
  • Supervising construction ensuring that site meets legal and health and safety guidelines
  • Managing budgets and project resources

A Civil Engineer should:

  • Be a good problem solver whilst being confident and decisive in their choices
  • Be able to lead and manage others to achieve the end goal
  • Possess strong budgetary skills

Entry Routes

For an individual looking to go into Civil Engineering, it’s a usual aspiration to become a Chartered Engineer. If this is the case, it is necessary to complete a Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng) or Masters degree (MEng) in Civil Engineering. This has to be accredited by the institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Candidates with a MEng are usually the preferred choice for entry-level positions.

Relevant work experience, whether it be within your degree, internships or summer work placements, go a long way.
